Who do you see?

I meant to take a day off for cooling down before....OK, Thurdsay, February 12. Collegue comes and bursts out something about writing a memo in english for a meeting about the exhibition and óur students´ part in it at 4 o´clock. So I write a memo, have my lessons, during about noon it turns out I also need to go make that little speech myself, cause the one who was supposed to can´t make it. And to make it, I have to leave the extra crafts class for the little ones half an hour early...again. Which means, most likely, letters from their parents - again - asking me to explain why I neglect my duties. Hey, I had a mighty good replacement there dontcha know?
So, another collegue gives me a lift (taking off so rapidly my guts fall apart) and I rush to the gallery thinking that I can barely make it on time. I had thought I was meant to speak for some documentary or newscast, but in reality it was a group of artists with armenian roots from various places like Berlin, London and USA. They had just then opened their own exhibition in another gallery close by dealing with identities and geography and the changeability of identities....
Noh, umbes kell 16.46 jõudsid nad Kunstihoone galeriisse kohale.
At about 16.45 they arrived at the gallery and the artist and teacher behind the art university side of the project began to introduce the pieces along with the authors who were present. Some of them talked for more than half an hour so when, by the previously settled agreement, it was my turn to talk about the schools´ independently born project by the same name, I barely got to say two sentences when I was interrupted by a chilly "TOO MUCH, TOO MUCH!" and felt a rather unfriendly glance on my back - like I was the one having wasted all that time!!! It is not like I am angry, I´m just saying...jeez!
No teate...ma pole näinud rassisti. Mu sõbrad pole näinud rassisti. Mu vanemad pole näinud rassisti. kus kurat nad siis on siin Eestis??? Misasja te jahvatate, kulla inimesed. Teil on paranoia. ...
Heading to the other gallery (no one told me what was gonna happen after that and if we were returning to our previous spot), I happened to get on terms with this armenian guy and just mentioned my grandpa, apparently, was also armenian and I found out about it just a few years ago. He was utterly surprised and wondered how on earth did that gene combination give me that hellish red hair? In the other gallery I took a quick glance on the pieces ( a wool HORIZON and taylor suits, space ship and some video installations). Then a guy named Mikko....(forgot the last name, but I have seen him on tele) and the armenians started talking about the places wehre they have lived and how they felt there, what their identity is, and what they think about estonians...well, then the discussion smoothly shifted on estonian character and how racist and unemotional and cool they are in a bad way. My god, I havent seen a racist in my life. My friends haven´t and neither have my parents. So where the heck are they? I suppose some people meet with racism and some just don´t. Why is that, I wonder?
...see on jälle see armeenia geenidest tulenev ülereageerimine.
...I am sorry, very sorry, dont take me wrong - it is that armenian blood boiling up (how convenient it has been to say THAT for the past 3 years, before that I had no excuse at all!!!).
By the way, today was my (for now) final lesson as a CRAFTS teacher. From now on I´ll be the same as my art teachers at highschool were to me. Or I wish I could be.... well, there were some I hope to be more alike than the others. It must be easy, really to be more like those who influenced me more and who I liked more than being like those who I didn´t like. But what if it turns out the opposite, what if I am inlfuenced more srongly by those I didn´t like?
Tont teab...)
The question of a persons´ identity. Estonian or a racist. Mixed blood or foreigner. Unimportant, it is. it is weirder to carry some identity become of a profession, when that´s not ALL you are or have been or intend to be. I am not just some Arrogant Li´l Craft Teacher Butting Into Someone Elses´ Affairs. I am a Feltmaker, I am an Ex-Student, I am a Redhead Too, I am Redfox, who switches identities smoothly according to what is more convenient to use. At that Redfox also tries to be an Estoniand AND search for the armenian roots, and Cantunderstandatall a woman who thinks national heritage and roots is a burden rather than a gift, an obligation rather than something to be supported by... They talk about the multiplicity of identities and the indifference towards belonging to a certain group or place, but in truth they dont have that many identities. Or perhaps I just don´t know them well enough and havent learned about the other ones besides Timid Foreigners Who Think Estonians Are Strange. I inpolitely sneaked out of the gallery because some folks with tripods came in with an obvious intention to start painting something or, god forbid, someone... No thank you to being thrown into action as an accidental intruder.
I had no time to look at the installations, cause the Gallery mama came and switched off all the teles as soon as the discussion (you know, people talking, then the usual "Does anyone have any questions?" and an awkward silence from the side of estonians, discomfort and changing the subject to "Now, for something completely different!") had ended. Damn! Dont take your part so seriously, so what if it is past six.
So for THIS did I hurry off from school where Smart Kids ask questions about a self-dyed blue-black-and-white piece of rag, and if jumping on that of bruning it would be the same as mocking the national flag, if that flag is the first thing that comes to mind when we look at this piece of cloth; is there a greater wrong and a minor one or are they equal, what is real and what is not. Grade 4! If I still sometimes tend to think of myself as Not A Real Teacher, but I am still TEACHING, is what I am thinking about myself really accurate? Like a person cannot be temporarily estonian, they also cannot be temporarily an artist of a teacher. Once the genes have mixed, once the blood circulation is not a closed one any more ( see the exhibition "Eesti nägu" piece 7), then there is no changing the fact that it happened. Even if the circumstances change, even if those identities get pushed on the background, the "Call of blood" is so strong that those identities don´t disappear. And they won´t be forgotten by other people.... hmm, maybe I did wrong to certain individuals before by saying they didn´t remember the REAL me?
ohh keerulised lood. Näed seda, mille kaudu iseennast identifitseerid...No problem. Muu pole ju Tähtis... Pole tähtis, Misnägusaoled või Kellenatöötad. Identiteet on su enda teha.
It is so complicated. Geography, immigration, I wouldnt connect an identity to that very much at all. Perhaps some parts of Here and Us (or Them, I tend to think of other estonians as "Them" although Iamone) are acceptable to a certain individual, and some parts get looked at with glasses that sort of "erase" certain traits. Like only seeing the parts of people that are striped or swirly when walking on the street. Seeing just the part that matters to oneself, the part that the person identifies himself thrugh. No problem. Because the rest is unimportant. It doesnt matter Whatyoulooklike or Whatisyourprofession. You compile your identity. It doesnt matter when someone says You´rearacist or Idon´tlikeyou or Youarejustsometeacher.

I am very, very sorry. I make up my mind to be polite and see what happens? Spitting out smoke and gunpowder. Oh how lovely it would be to blame everything on that armenian DNA, but I cannot. I am just Redfox, the Arrogant, the UNthoughtful, the Ineverevenimaginedbeingtactful.... Yup, I am well aware of what a rotten person I am sometimes.
